A19 temporary diversions for New Tyne Crossing road works

A19 temporary diversions for New Tyne Crossing road works
- business as usual at Tyne Tunnel

Construction of the second vehicle tunnel under the Tyne, part of the New TyneCrossing project, requires a gas main to be diverted north of the existing TyneTunnel. The works will necessitate weekend lane closures of the A19, duringwhich time diversion routes will be in place.

The Tyne Tunnel will remain open and fully operational throughout these works.

Phase 1

From 20.00 hours on Friday 17th April 2009 until 12.00 hours on Sunday 19 th April a section of the A19 southbound, between the Howdon Interchange (junction with A193) and the Tyne Tunnel roundabout, will be temporarily closed.

During the temporary closure drivers will be diverted along the A193 and on tothe A187 (Howdon By-pass), which will be opened to bi-directional traffic for thisperiod.

The A187 link road leading to the Tyne Tunnel roundabout will be temporarily reopened to southbound Tyne Tunnel traffic.

Normal traffic routes will be reinstated after 12 noon on Sunday.

Phase 2

During the following weekend, from 20.00 hours on Friday 24th April until 12.00 hours on Sunday 26th April, a section of the A19 northbound will be temporarily closed to traffic.

The northbound A19 between the Tyne Tunnel roundabout and the Silverlink interchange will be closed, with traffic diverted onto the adjacent southbound carriageway of the A19.
During this period traffic on the A19 between the Silverlink junction and the Tyne Tunnel roundabout will be reduced to a single lane of traffic in each direction.

Note that access to the A193 will be restricted during this period. Southbound traffic will access the A193 as usual, but northbound traffic will be required to follow the diversion route via the Silverlink interchange. The Tyne Tunnel will be fully open in both directions throughout these temporary road works. Normal traffic routes will be reinstated after 12 noon on Sunday.

Phase 3

From 20.00 hours on Friday 8th May until 12.00 hours on Sunday 10th May road works will take place on A187 Howdon By-pass requiring a temporary lane closure.

Temporary traffic signals will be operating during the closure of the southbound lanes of the A187.
The A19 will be unaffected by these temporary road works and the Tyne Tunnel will remain open for business as usual.
