Howard Street Bridge road closure

An unavoidable closure of Howard Street Bridge in Jarrow will take place in the New Year to enable a key part of the New Tyne Crossing project to be completed, but pedestrians will enjoy an early preview of the new road bridge that will replace it.

Howard Street Bridge will close to vehicle traffic for four weeks from 0.00hours on Wednesday 6 January 2009 so that construction of the replacement road bridge, part of the A185 that crosses the A19 close to the entrance of the Tyne Tunnel, can be finished. However, the new road bridge will be open to pedestrians during the closure period, giving them a chance to use it weeks before the first vehicles.

Traffic diversion signs will be in place to assist motorists in finding alternative routes during the closure.

Trevor Jackson, Managing Director of Tyne Tunnel Concessionaire TT2, said: “This is a vital piece of work for the progress of the project. The New Tyne Crossing design and build contractor, Bouygues Travaux Publics, has worked closely with South Tyneside Council to sensitively manage the impacts of this road closure. We will be doing all we can to complete this activity as quickly as possible. The sooner this work is done, the sooner we can open the new bridge to traffic.”

From 3 February 2010 Howard Street Bridge will reopen to traffic.

The Tyne Tunnel will remain open for business as usual throughout these works.
