South Roundabout Lane Closure

Notice of Closure of “hamburger” lane at Tyne Tunnel roundabout – Tyne Tunnel open as usual

A permanent lane closure will come into effect on Monday 21st September 2009 at the south junction of the Tyne Tunnel.

The link lane (known as the “hamburger” lane) that crosses the roundabout at the south junction of the vehicle tunnel currently provides direct access to the tunnel entrance for northbound traffic coming from Jarrow. From next Monday drivers from Jarrow will be required to travel around the roundabout rather than across it if they wish to access the Tyne Tunnel.

The “hamburger” lane must be closed to enable essential works for the New Tyne Crossing project to take place within the existing roundabout. The work has been scheduled to take place after the BUPA Great North Run and following completion of A1 road works at Allerdene Bridge in order to minimise disruption to motorists.

The A19 will be unaffected by this permanent lane closure and the Tyne Tunnel will remain open for business as usual. TT2 will allocate additional staff to the junction while motorists adjust to the new arrangement.
