Temporary Traffic Management in Jarrow

A major transformation to the road layout at the south junction of the Tyne Tunnel will be implemented this weekend as the existing Tyne Tunnel roundabout in Jarrow disappears.

From Sunday 12th September, motorists using the A19 will be able to enjoy a direct route into and out of the vehicle tunnel over the site of the previous roundabout.

Furthermore, the new loop road bridge at the Tyne Tunnel junction which opened earlier this year to traffic in one direction only, will now offer motorists two lanes of traffic, one in each direction and from this weekend provides a dedicated link between the A19 and Jarrow /South Shields.

In the final design of the junction, a new, smaller roundabout will serve Jarrow and South Shields traffic. This will be located to the east of the original Tyne Tunnel roundabout site.

While design and build contractor, Bouygues Travaux Publics create the new roundabout, it will be necessary to temporarily close one lane of Straker Street (the lane that leads down to the Tyne Tunnel junction from the Howard Street / Priory Road roundabout), and close the A185 carriageway towards South Shields for vehicles heading from the Tyne Tunnel junction. The A185 will remain open in the opposite direction, enabling vehicles from South Shields to join the A19 (southbound only).

It is expected to take four months to construct the new roundabout at the south junction, and during this period motorists will be asked to follow the clearly signed diversion routes.

Pedestrian movements will be maintained throughout.
