Tolls

Tyne Tunnels

Tolls charged on vehicles using the Vehicle Tunnel are collected at the north end of the tunnels where toll lanes are installed on both entry and exit sides of the carriageway. There are no charges for using either the Pedestrian or Cycle Tunnels.

As well as accepting cash payments of toll charges TT2 operates a Permit Prepaid Tolling System, a handy cashless toll payment method for paying your Tyne Tunnel toll which includes a 10% discount.

Please note change is not available in the toll lanes.  Change machines are available for north and southbound traffic, and in both cases are located before the toll plaza, to the left hand side of the carriageway. The current charges for both cash and permit tolls are shown in the table below:

Vehicle Cash Permit
Motorbike Free N/A
Car/Light Van (less than or equal to 3500 kg)
Bus (less than or equal to 16 seats excluding driver)

LGV/Van (greater than 3500 kg)
Bus (greater than 16 seats excluding driver)

PLEASE NOTE: COPPER COINS ARE NOT ACCEPTED OR EXCHANGED FOR PAYMENT OF TOLLS.

The price of the toll is determined from the Tyne Tunnel Bye-laws and Tolls Prescription Order that have their origins in the Tyne Tunnel Act 1960.

Prepaid Tolling System – Permits

The Permit Prepaid Tolling System is a handy cashless payment method for paying your Tyne Tunnel toll. It allows speedy passage through the toll booths and gives a 10% discount.

When you join, you receive a ‘tag’ to put on your windscreen. As you approach the toll booth the permit system reads your tag, checks your account and will lift the barrier to allow you to pass when your account is in credit. You will receive visual notification at the booth as your account approaches zero credit reminding you to top-up.

Sign up, speed up and save.
