Weekend Vehicle Tunnel Closure 5th-6th June 2010
Weekend Vehicle Tunnel Closure 5th – 6th June 2010
Ongoing construction of the south junction of the New Tyne Crossing requires a complete closure of the existing vehicle tunnel, project bosses have announced.
From 05:00 hours on Saturday 5th June until 23:00 hours on Sunday 6th June 2010 the existing Tyne Tunnel will be closed to enable a bridge that crosses the A19 close to the Tyne Tunnel entrance in Jarrow to be demolished.
As part of the New Tyne Crossing project a new road bridge above the A19, the A185 Howard Street Bridge, successfully opened to traffic in February 2010. Demolition of the original Howard Street Bridge that it replaces can now take place, enabling building works at the tunnel’s south junction to proceed.
During the demolition works it will not be safe for traffic to pass beneath the bridge. Furthermore the carriageway will be obstructed by demolition materials and equipment. Therefore a full tunnel closure is essential.
Drivers wishing to use the Tyne Tunnel are advised to travel via the Tyne Bridge or A1 Western Bypass to reach their destinations during the closure.
From 23:00 hours on Sunday 6th June normal operations will return at the Tyne Tunnel and it will be business as usual.
The new Howard Street Bridge, and the pedestrian and cyclist tunnels, will remain open throughout the demolition activities.
Trevor Jackson, Managing Director of Tyne Tunnel operator TT2, said: “We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by this unavoidable tunnel closure. Motorists can rest assured that we will do our utmost to reopen the tunnel as quickly as possible, as soon as the demolition of the old road bridge has been completed. Unfortunately it simply isn’t safe to keep the tunnel open while a bridge is removed above the carriageway.”
