About this career opportunity:
This is a brand-new vacancy and an exciting opportunity to join the team at a time of ongoing expansion within our operations team. The role is varied and interesting and you will play a vital role in supporting the Maintenance team ensuring the safety, reliability and efficiency of tunnel operations. This position is responsible for applying technical expertise to oversee, maintain, and enhance the performance of all tunnel systems, including mechanical, electrical, fabric, ventilation, lighting, fire safety, and SCADA control systems.
Main role responsibilities (Please see Job Description for full details)
- Proactively monitoring and maintaining these critical assets, the Technical Engineer helps prevent system failures, minimises disruptions to tunnel users, and support the continuous flow of traffic.
- The Technical Engineer acts as a technical authority, providing guidance and support to maintenance teams, leading troubleshooting efforts, and identifying opportunities for system upgrades and process improvements
- Provide expert technical support for the operation and maintenance of all tunnel systems, including troubleshooting, fault diagnosis, and problem resolution.
- Support and supervise planned preventative and corrective maintenance activities. Ensure work is performed to required technical and safety standards.
- Monitor the performance and condition of tunnel assets through regular inspections, remote monitoring tools, and data analysis.

Essential requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fabric, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience in technical engineering roles, preferably within transportation infrastructure, or similar complex environments.
Desirable Skill Requirements:
- Familiarity with systems such as ventilation, lighting, fire safety, control systems (SCADA), and power distribution.
- Strong technical and analytical abilities.
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office and relevant engineering software.
Location and working hours:
Working as part of the Operational Delivery team, you will be working 37 hours per week based in our Wallsend office. The office hours are Monday to Thursday 08.30 – 16.30 including 30-minute unpaid lunch break and Friday 08.30 – 16.00 including 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
You may require site visits to tunnel environments (confined spaces, noisy areas). You may be required to participate in on-call rota and may be required for shift work or emergency response participation.

To attract the best candidates, we will offer a salary of £53,787.00 per annum, along with membership of the Local Government Defined Benefit Pension Scheme. The on-call rota is currently 1:3 weeks £3507.00 per annum. We also offer 26 days annual leave, plus 8 days bank holidays.
