Tyne Tunnels Makes Major Investment in Solar Energy
TT2 has made a major investment in solar energy to supply green power to its 12,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Wallsend, supporting its mission to achieve sustainable operational excellence.
DVC Commercial Roofing Contractors has been appointed to install 572 sq. m. (6,164 sq. ft.) of energy‑harnessing panels, converting sunlight into approximately 115,000 kWh of electricity per year, the equivalent annual energy usage of around 42 UK family homes.
A total of 212 photovoltaic panels, supplied by Aberla, are being fitted to the roofs of three properties at the Tyne Tunnels site. The installation is expected to reduce TT2’s carbon emissions by approximately 28 tonnes each year and will take around five weeks to complete.
Since achieving carbon neutrality in 2021, TT2 has expanded its sustainability strategy to address emissions across its entire value chain. The solar project builds on existing initiatives, including the use of 100% renewable electricity and LED lighting across all tunnels and offices.
Additional operational improvements include the transition of the maintenance and escort fleet, covering around 60,000 miles annually to electric vehicles. TT2 is also exploring rainwater harvesting to reduce non‑potable water use and continues to work with environmental partners to restore and protect biodiversity, including 45,000 square metres of woodland above the Northbound Tunnel.
The site now includes beehives and wildlife monitoring to protect local species. In 2025, TT2 invested more than £120,000 in community initiatives, supporting regional organisations such as St John Ambulance and local food banks.
COO at TT2, Shaun Simmons, said: “This significant investment in solar technology is a proud milestone in our journey toward a greener future for the Tyne Tunnels. Reducing our carbon emissions by 28 tonnes annually reflects our long‑term commitment to sustainability and responsible operations.”
