First-ever deployment of Tyne Tunnels’ advanced mist system during vehicle fire incident
Tyne Tunnel vehicle fire extinguished within an hour following first-ever deployment of advanced mist system
A vehicle fire inside the southbound Tyne Tunnel was safely extinguished on Saturday 24 October following the first-ever live incident deployment of TT2’s advanced water mist fire suppression system, allowing both tunnels to reopen within one hour.
The incident, involving a Ford Fiesta, occurred at approximately 16:33, prompting traffic to be temporarily held in both directions while emergency procedures immediately took place.
The automated water mist system activated as designed, suppressing the fire and controlling conditions within the tunnel before crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service arrived on scene. TT2’s on-site first response team worked closely with emergency services to manage the incident and safely remove the vehicle from the tunnel.
No injuries were reported and attendance from the North East Ambulance Service was not required.
The incident marked the first real-life activation of the water mist suppression system since its installation, demonstrating the effectiveness of the extensive safety infrastructure in place across the Tyne Tunnels. The system is subject to regular testing, maintenance and staff training exercises to ensure it remains ready to respond in the event of an emergency.
Before reopening the tunnel to traffic, TT2’s operational teams undertook comprehensive inspections and safety checks to ensure that the tunnel environment was safe for customers.
Both tunnels were safely reopened at approximately 17:29, helping to minimise disruption for motorists during a period of increased demand on the crossing during the temporary closure of the Tyne Bridge.
David Little, Head of Operational Delivery at TT2, said:
“Safety is our number one priority and this incident demonstrated exactly why we invest in advanced safety systems, rigorous testing and continuous staff training.
“While no operator ever wants to see a vehicle fire occur, our water mist suppression system performed exactly as intended, activating immediately and helping to bring the situation under control quickly and safely.
“Our teams were on scene within moments and worked in close partnership with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service throughout the response. Thanks to that coordinated effort, we were able to safely reopen the tunnels within an hour while ensuring that no compromises were made on safety.
“We know how important the Tyne Tunnels are to thousands of people travelling across the region every day, particularly while the Tyne Bridge is closed. We’d like to thank motorists for their patience and extend our sincere thanks to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service for their swift support.”
The incident response reflects TT2’s continued commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards while ensuring the Tyne Tunnels remain a safe, reliable and efficient route across the Tyne for the region’s motorists.
