A new look for the Tyne Tunnels

We’re proud to introduce our updated Tyne Tunnels branding, created to better reflect the communities we serve and the role we play every day in connecting people and places across the region.

You will start to see our new look across our website, app and customer communications from 25 November 2025. This update brings a clearer, more modern identity that supports our commitment to delivering a value-driven service for our community.

Our History

For more than half a century, the Tyne Tunnels have been a vital part of the North East’s transport network.
The first vehicular tunnel, opened in 1967, and provided a long-awaited link between North and South Tyneside and rapidly became an essential gateway for workers, businesses and visitors, supporting regional growth.
The second vehicle tunnel, opened in 2011, expanded capacity and reduced congestion, supporting growing demand and enabling smoother, faster journeys.
The introduction of Open Road Tolling in 2021 marked one of the most significant modernisations in Tyne Tunnels history, removing toll booths, cutting journey times and reducing traffic emissions – all whilst creating over 80 new roles at the TT2 Head Office.
Throughout every stage of our development, one thing has remained constant: our role as a critical regional connector, supporting daily life, economic growth and adding value to the communities we serve.

Our value to the region

Every year, millions of journeys pass through the Tyne Tunnels, helping people get to work, education, healthcare, family and leisure. Beyond this, we play a strategic role in supporting the North East economy by:
  • Keeping journeys efficient and reliable, reducing congestion across the wider road network.
  • Enabling regional growth, supporting supply chains, tourism and logistics.
  • Investing in sustainable operations and improvements.
  • Delivering community impact, through our local events partnerships, education outreach, environmental projects and the Tyne Tunnels Community Fund.
Our refreshed brand represents not just our service, but our promise: to continue providing safe, sustainable and reliable infrastructure that the region can rely on for decades to come.

Our Purpose

We exist to deliver regional growth by offering the most reliable, safe, sustainable and efficient service for all who travel through our tunnels each day. This rebrand is part of our long-term commitment to keep improving, keep working in partnership and keep making a positive difference across the North East.
