How to apply for a toll exemption
To apply for a Blue Badge exemption or Disability Tax exemption, please find the application forms here. If you’ve applied before September 2021, please re-apply using the form.
Once you have submitted your application, our customer service team will aim to process this in 5 working days. You will then receive confirmation via email of this, along with instructions on how to access your online account.
How exemptions will work on an online account
Step 1 – Getting started:
Once you have online access to your account, you can now manage your exemption online.
You can have one vehicle marked against your exemption. If you have a Blue Badge exemption, this can be changed once per calendar month via your online account or by contacting us via phone or email.
If you need to use another vehicle and still want to receive your exemption but this isn’t on your account, you need to display your Blue Badge at an inspection lane (details below).
NOTE: For existing exemption customers, you are being contacted to set this up and migrate from your physical permit to Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).
Step 2 – Travelling with your exemption:
You no longer need to stop at the Tyne Tunnels. This means once you have had your exemption approved, you can drive straight through without stopping. Our Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras inside the Tunnels detects your Vehicle Registration Number and apply the exemption to your passage.
Renewing your exemption
Renewing your exemption still applies. You have to do this once a year. You can do this online here following the link to a Blue Badge exemption or Disability Tax exemption form, and selecting “This is a renewal application”.
If you don’t have an online account and your Vehicle Registration Number is not linked to an exemption account, you need to stop at an inspection lane with your relevant documentation otherwise the toll is payable. Paper forms are available at the inspection lanes for postal applications, if you don’t have online access to apply for a toll exemption account or if you don’t want to have an online account.
PLEASE NOTE: The inspection lanes are only a temporary setup. You have to stop at an inspection lane every time you travel if you don’t have an online account in order to receive your exemption.
Inspection lanes are located at both the Southbound and Northbound approach before entering either Tunnel (signage will direct you to these lanes).
- A member of staff will be present at the lane who can to assist you. The purpose of stopping at an inspection lane is to assign your exemption to your Vehicle Registration Number on our system so that you can drive straight through the Tunnels with our new Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.
- In order to be assigned an exemption token for your passage, make sure you have your Blue Badge with you, or other relevant documents if you are a Disability Tax exemption customer.
- A member of staff will ask for the details of the vehicle you are travelling in, in order to assign the exemption to your journey. (This will only apply for the one passage, not for a round trip).
- After the toll exemption has been assigned to the vehicle you are travelling in, you can drive straight through the tunnel. If you make another journey, this process needs to be repeated until you have your exemption on an online account.
If you provided your email address to a member of staff, you will receive an email after your journey with instruction on how to apply for exemption and gain access to an online account. This means after this account is set up, you won’t have to stop at an inspection lane next time in order to receive your toll exemption.

What will happen if I don’t register my Vehicle Registration Number with my exemption account?
You have to stop at an inspection lane during every passage if you want to receive your exemption. If not, the toll is payable. Failure to pay the toll on time (by midnight the day after your journey), will result in additional charges.
Can I still show my Blue Badge to claim my exemption?
Yes. You can show this at an inspection lane following the instructions above. However, inspection lanes are only a temporary measure meaning you will eventually have to setup an online account in order to receive your exemption.
I use more than one vehicle, how will this work?
You can only register one vehicle against your exemption. You will have the option to change your registered vehicle once per month. You can do this via your online account or by contacting us via phone or email. If you are travelling in another vehicle that’s not registered against your exemption account but still want to receive your exemption for that passage, please pull into an inspection lane (details above).
What if the vehicle I’m travelling in is registered with a Pre-paid account?
If this is the vehicle you regularly travel in, you can have this assigned to your toll exemption on your online account and the driver can pay for any journeys they make when you are not in the car by using the “Pay for Journey” button on the Journey History.
You will not be able to add this vehicle against your exemption unless you remove this from the Pre-paid account as it cannot be on both. If you don’t remove it, you will need to display your Blue Badge/ relevant exemption documents at an inspection lane (details above). If you do remove the Vehicle Registration Number from the Pre-paid account, they will then need to ensure that they add their Vehicle Registration Number back onto their accounts for any future paid journeys on the Pre-paid account.
I don’t have online access. How do I apply and manage my exemption account?
You will be able to get a paper form at an inspection lane in order to apply for toll exemption and set up your exemption account this way. To manage your account and change which vehicle is assigned to your exemption (this can be changed once per month for Blue Badge exemption customers) you will have to contact us via phone or email.
